Our Story
Every ripple starts somewhere
Every ripple starts somewhere
RippleNorth didn’t begin with a neat business plan or a clever marketing idea.
It came out of real life.
A few years where family life changed completely. Health problems we never expected. Worry, uncertainty, grief, long days, difficult nights, and the kind of experiences that make you look at life differently afterwards.
Through all of that, the things that helped were often surprisingly small.
Getting outside. A walk. Fresh air. A message from someone at the right time. Family turning up. Sitting somewhere quiet. Laughing when you didn’t really feel like laughing. Having something to look forward to.
None of those things fix everything.
But sometimes they move you forward just enough.
And that idea is where RippleNorth really began.
The years that changed us
In 2022, our son Rudi became seriously unwell.
Life changed almost overnight.
He went from being an active child to dealing with pain, fatigue and symptoms that affected almost every part of his day. There were hospital stays, appointments, uncertainty and long periods where we were simply trying to understand what was happening to him.
Over time, our world became smaller.
Plans changed. School became difficult. Normal family life stopped feeling quite so normal.
When you live through something like that, you start noticing the things that make a hard day more manageable.
For us, getting outside became one of them.
Not big adventures or perfect Instagram walks.
Just being out.
A local trail. Trees. Water. Open sky. The dog running ahead. A bit of space away from appointments, screens, worry and everything that needed solving.
Those moments didn’t cure anything.
They just made life feel a little bigger again.

Then came grief
In November 2024, I lost my brother Adam.
There are some things that divide life very clearly into before and after.
Losing Adam was one of them.
Grief changes the way you notice people.
It makes you realise how much we often don’t know about what someone else is carrying.
It also makes you notice the small acts of kindness that stay with you.
The people who send the message.
The people who remember.
The people who sit with you when there isn’t anything useful to say.
Those things matter.
Probably more than the person doing them ever realises.
And that became another part of the idea behind RippleNorth.
Why the ripple?
Drop something small into still water and the effect carries on beyond the point where it landed. That felt like a pretty good way of describing a lot of what we'd experienced.
A conversation can change someone's day. A person checking in can make somebody feel less alone. Something you do without thinking much about it might mean far more to someone else than you ever realise.
That's where Every Ripple Starts Somewhere came from. Not because every small thing changes the world, but because you never really know what it might start.
Why North?
Because this is home.
RippleNorth was shaped in Yorkshire — by the places we walk, the weather we complain about, the hills, reservoirs, woodland, old villages and the people around us.
The North isn’t just part of the name because it sounds good.
It’s part of the identity.
There’s something about northern landscapes that fits the brand perfectly.
They’re not always polished.
They’re not always pretty.
Sometimes they’re wet, grey, windy and muddy.
But they’re real.
And there’s usually something good about being out in them anyway.
More than clothing
RippleNorth started with clothing, but it was never meant to stop there.
A hoodie thrown on for a dog walk.
A tee worn to the pub.
A cap on a weekend away.
A tumbler in the car.
The products are part of RippleNorth, but they're not the whole idea. I want it to become something people actually feel part of, whether that's through something they wear, something they read, getting outside or eventually walking into a RippleNorth space for a coffee.
I don't want to overcomplicate it. If something makes somebody feel welcome, gives them a reason to get out of the house or starts a conversation, that's enough.

Where we’re going
RippleNorth is still at the beginning, and I'm still working out exactly where it can go.
The clothing and lifestyle range will grow, and the Journal will stay a place for the stories and experiences behind the brand.
I'm also now exploring something I hadn't expected to be considering quite this soon — a physical RippleNorth space bringing the clothing together with good coffee and somewhere people actually enjoy spending time.
It's still an idea I'm researching rather than a done deal, but I'd love it to be somewhere you could come in on your own without feeling awkward, meet somebody for coffee, browse, or just sit somewhere comfortable for a while.
Nothing clinical and nothing trying too hard. Just a really good independent coffee and retail space that happens to have something meaningful behind it.
This is RippleNorth
RippleNorth came from some of the hardest parts of our life, but I don't want it to be a brand about sadness.
It's about real life after and around the difficult bits too — family, getting outside, going places, laughing at stupid things, spending time with people and appreciating the ordinary days a bit more than perhaps you did before.
That's the life RippleNorth came from, and it's the one I want the brand to belong in.
Every Ripple Starts Somewhere.
What matters to us
Made for real life.
Things to wear and use, not save for best.
People matter.
The ones who turn up, check in, make you laugh and are there when life's a bit much.
Get outside when you can.
No mountains required.
